The aim of the present study was to conceptualize five sport-specific self-concepts (football, basketball, gymnastics, athletics, swimming) by using factor analysis and assess the relations between joy of physical education, these five sports-specific self-concepts and perceived teacher care among 239 students (45.2 % girls) from 3rd to 5th grades. Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses showed that the five sports-specific self-concepts are clearly separable from each other. Joy of physical education was positively related to almost all self-concept facets and perceived teacher care. A multilevel regression model indicated that when controlling for gender and age, self-concepts of football and swimming as well as teacher care affected joy of physical education. Elementary school children reported more joy of physical education than secondary school students who perceived a higher teacher care than elementary school children. Boys stated higher self-concepts of football and basketball than girls, while girls demonstrated higher self-concepts of gymnastics than boys.
