This report describes the construct validation of an objective instrument and competence model for the measurement of general pedagogical competence in universitary teacher education. Pedagogical competence can be divided into several domains of knowledge-content and requirements of using this knowledge. This structure, which is the foundation of the operationalization of pedagogical competence for the instrument at hand, is tested via structural equation modeling. On the basis of a sample of 700 future teachers four different models are contrasted: a model with one general factor, a model with three content factors, a model with three requirement factors and a combined model with both content and requirement factors. The first three models reveal a bad model fit. Only the fit-test of the combined model results in a good fit. As also assumed, the correlations between the content factors are at a moderate level. As well, the hierarchical structure of cognitive activities is confirmed concerning the dimensions of requirement. Due to the fact that these findings are based only on data from the University of Paderborn it is discussed, if this structure can be generalized. At the moment data collection is carried out at several different universities to empirically assess this question. (DIPF/Orig.).
