The interaction between ecological norm orientation and external conditions of proenvironmental behavior is investigated in an experimental field study. Schwartz's norm activation model (1977) is applied to the domain of travel mode choice. In a random sample covering 160 persons 'fare' has been experimentally manipulated by the distribution of free tickets whereas 'distance to station' has been varied through selection of test subjects. Results indicate that ecological norm orientation and fare are similar strong predictors of travel mode choice. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.
