Against the background of various models of teachers’ professional competences in general and especially as regards teaching basic science and social studies from the perspective of education for sustainable development, it is possible to derive important competences for becoming a successful teacher. The question remains how the development of such competences can be supported in teacher education. With respect to education for sustainable development, the article explores how open learning environments can be introduced as a way of supporting competence development especially regarding inter- and transdisciplinary approaches to teaching basic science and social studies.
