This workshop report introduces a didactic concept – the differentiation grid. The
differentiation grid was used to help lecturers at universities handle student
diversity and to inspire teachers in training to deal with diversity in classrooms. The
concept was applied in an educational science seminar at the Friedrich Schiller
University Jena and was evaluated via a survey of 203 teacher students. Our
findings not only demonstrate that teachers in training positively react to the
consideration of their prior knowledge, but also intend to use the differentiation grid
to plan their lessons.
