Optical flow fields and visual attention in car driving

When driving through the environment, visual information seen by the driver changes dynamically. This optical flow contains specific information, which is used by the driver to steer their vehicle. One important question is whether attentional shifts within an optical flow field are influenced by the location of the focus of expansion. Therefore the focus of expansion was varied in spatial depth for this study. The optical flow was generated on a two-dimensional display by moving and size-changing dots.
