The modern man is in a fundamental uncertainty. He has two ways to deal with this: he can distract himself or he can try to express himself in spite of the uncertainty. Education has the task to enable people to develop themselves in this way.New digital media have a promise. They promise security in an uncertain world through self-control and self-optimization. This can be seen in the phenomenon of quantified self, which can be interpreted as an expression of a transhumanist agenda. This security is an alleged one, for in fact it leads to an indubitable, dehumanized and meaningless existence, in short: downfall of man. This paper shows that, in particular, the potential of media pedagogy, not only to prevent man’s downfall, but even to make it a transition.
For this, it is necessary to consider the phenomenon of quantified self from a theoretical perspective on education.
