The aim of this article is to contribute to the understanding of media-based managerial decision making in organizations. First, it analyzes graphical methods and visualization devices that were systematically adopted by business management between 1880 and 1930. These visualization devices were used to create managerial decision systems that heavily relied on charts and other graphical methods. Together they form a new visual culture of managerial decision-making where aspects of temporality become crucial and decisions are made “at a glance”. Second, drawing on the case of the managerial decision system “decision-making at a glance” it develops a theory framework that combines media theory, infrastructural studies and system theory to theorize cycles of sociomaterial decision practices in organizations.
