„By ‚hypertext‘ I mean non-sequential writing.“ So definierte Theodor Holm Nelson eine Literaturform, die er damit zwar nicht erfunden, aber doch benannt hat. Nelson war der pointierteste Vertreter eines Befreiungs-Phantasmas, onach das Buch freies Denken so nachhaltig behindere, dass es durch Schreib- und Lese-Computer abgelöst werden müsse, die dem freien Fluss menschlicher Assoziation Bahn zu brechen vermöchten. Hypertexte sind schon vor Nelson erahnt worden und zwar aus drohender Langeweile eines Präsidentenberaters, dann als Prototyp des Vaters der Mutter aller Demos, sie erfuhren enormen Auftrieb aus dem Wunsch nach Vereinigung der gesamten Menschheit; und Hypertexte sind seit 1993 eine Realität, gehasst von denen, die Besseres im Sinne hatten. Aber alles wird dann doch gut am Ende, denn wenn es so ist,
dass wir mit den Beinen sehen, dann wird auch klar, wie die Menschheit schließlich doch noch das Problem der Informationsüberflutung lösen kann.
