The digital transformation is not only reshaping the business models and corporate strategies of automotive companies but also implies a shift in the requirements for digital competencies within their IT function. While companies are addressing the knowledge and skills of their employees, there is a deficit in terms of the timeliness and precision of competencies that can contribute to adaptability and value creation. Therefore, continuous identification of changes in digital competencies and ongoing development of competency models are necessary. This article describes the update of the IT competency model of the Volkswagen AG. Through a focus group study and the use of a competency catalog, the need for knowledge and skills development within the IT function was identified and consolidated into a competency model. Over a period of three years, a total of 25 changes in 9 competency areas emerged. The results highlight the rapid evolution of digital competencies in IT, especially in the areas of personal and social skills. The developed competency model and the approach to updating the model can assist other companies in developing or enhancing their own competency models.
