This paper critically discusses the current state of research on the topic of refugee families in Germany and reflects on it for the further development of heterogeneity-sensitive social work. For this purpose, we compare the state of research with findings of broader family research and migration research. We show that the majority of existing studies on refugee families in Germany tend to reproduce traditional conceptions of the “refugee family” in terms of social and regulatory policy. We show which options of reifying the familialities of people who went through forced migration should be reflected more strongly in order to further develop a heterogeneity-sensitive approach to social work.
