Emer O'Sullivan - Lecturer
Before the outbreak of the First World War, picturebooks were published in Germany and Britain in the service of patriotic education and to prepare young children for the war; during the war years, enthusiasm for the conflict was encouraged by books which celebrated military action and justified ‘necessary’ sacrifices. This paper will take a comparative look at the construction of patriotism, models of national identity and images of friends and enemies in the literature of two opposing forces during the Great War.
