This paper investigates ways of using the paradigm model of the Grounded Theory according to Strauss/Corbin for the reconstruction
of the development of competencies. Within the framework of a university
seminar, an analysis was carried out both of how the development of ‘shaping competence’ (‘Gestaltungskompetenz’) as the objective
of education for sustainable development can be supported by using elearning and how processes of competence development take place. The reconstruction of these processes was done according to the rules and theoretical principles of the Grounded Theory. Following the steps
of open, axial and selective coding, a way was found to generate a theoretically rich thesis. The result of this study is that the development of shaping competence can be described as “creative action in complex
and demanding situations”.
