The year 2009 marked the completion of the first half of the UN Decade „Education for Sustainable Development”. This provided the opportunity to critically reflect on the achievements so far and the tasks and challenges remaining to be addressed. Thus, the Third International Conference on Higher Education for Sustainable Development, jointly organized by the UNESCO Chair „Higher Education for Sustainable Development” at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg, Germany and the Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang in 2009 addressed the central question of what added value integrating questions of sustainability has for teaching and learning in higher education. This book reflects upon what has been achieved so far in higher education for
sustainable development and gives a snapshot of what is going on at the very
moment. We trust this will contribute to the discourse in the growing area of
higher education for sustainable development and help to fulfill the objective
outlined in the title of this volume: to look back and move forward.
