Next to technical challenges, new forms of data also present theoretical and methodological challenges to existing qualitative approaches. The development of video data and the increasing ease with which it can be produced, stored, and edited has caused significant changes in qualitative research. This article discusses central challenges which arise from transcribing and analyzing these ‘moving images’. These specific challenges (the pull of detail, the temptations of omniscience, and too high or too low degrees of distancing from the data) are demonstrated by drawing on recent developments in conversation analysis. Conversation analysis presents one of the oldest research programs within the spectrum of qualitative methods. It serves well to demonstrate how ‘new’ forms of data affect primary methodological assumptions and call them into question only in passing. The article argues that such profound challenges to methodology ought to be discussed in an active way rather than gradually letting them happen.
