The chapter shows that the concept of contingency which has a long history dating back to ancient times has always played an important role particularly in times of rapid and fundamental cultural change when scholars feel that highly rationalist interpretations tend to misrepresent social reality and when insecurities with respect to the future seem to gain ground. This will be demonstrated by a brief analysis of research fields as different as sociology, history and aesthetic theory.
