Topics

Forschungsschwerpunkte am Institut für Ökologie sind die Auswirkungen von globalen Veränderungen wie Klimawandel und Landnutzungswandel auf Organismen und ihre Lebensgemeinschaften und auf biologisch funktionelle und chemische Prozesse. Dazu zählen auch die Auswirkungen eines vermehrten Anbaus von Energiepflanzen oder auch verschiedenste Verschmutzungen in terrestrischen und aquatischen Ökosystemen. Im Fokus stehen die Ursachen und die Auswirkungen des Rückgangs von Tier- und Pflanzenpopulationen sowie des aktuellen Biodiversitätsverlustes und der damit einhergehenden Veränderung abiotischer und biotischer Ökosystemfunktionen. In Zusammenarbeit mit humanwissenschaftlichen Arbeitsgruppen der Leuphana Universität werden auch sozio-ökonomische Faktoren der Ökosystemforschung gemeinsam betrachtet.

Die experimentelle Forschung findet sowohl in Laboren, im Gewächshaus und auf Freiflächen der Leuphana Universität statt. Weiter finden viele Untersuchungen in Kulturlandschaften und in städtischen Gebieten statt. Die Freilanduntersuchungen werden in den verschiedensten Ländern der gemäßigten und mediterranen Breiten und der Tropen und Sub-Tropen durchgeführt aber auch regional wie z.B. in Lüneburg und der Lüneburger Heide. Forschungskooperationen bestehen hierbei mit vielen verschiedenen nationalen und internationalen Universitäten und außeruniversitären Einrichtungen wie z.B. lokalen Naturschutzorganisationen und Schulen. Besonders hervorzuheben sind die Kooperationen mit der Alfred Töpfer Akademie für Naturschutz und die Biosphärenreservatsverwaltung Niedersächsische Elbtalaue.
