‘Alsatian roots, Irish leaves. Tomi Ungerer, a plurilingual and pluricultural author’

Activity: Talk or presentationConference PresentationsResearch

Emer O'Sullivan - Speaker

Tomi Ungerer’s books are available in some 30 different languages. Many authors have been translated, but the plurilingual Ungerer actually wrote in three languages and even self-translated his memoir into the two in which it was not originally written. He loved words, and constantly reflected on differences between languages, on how language is linked to cultural identity, on how to translate culture. His cultural, political activism included pushing for measures to keep the dying language Yiddish alive, for teaching the Holocaust in French schools, for having German taught in French schools and French in German ones. Ungerer and his languages are the focus of this talk.
