Foreign language pedagogy is faced with the challenge of developing inclusive teaching and learning approaches that facilitate access to foreign language learning for all. Instruction for people with special educational needs (SEN) can be supported through a wide variety of digital media that do not simply make learning possible, but also enhance it. This article therefore considers digital technologies that can support learners with SEN in their foreign language acquisition; it furthermore considers which alternative learning possibilities are offered by these technologies to all learners in inclusive settings. To present these digital technologies, the authors have chosen two different approaches: First, they summarize four characteristics of digital learning tools that seem to be particularly relevant for learners with SEN. Secondly, particular challenges faced by learners with specific SEN are introduced, and technologies that can facilitate and support the language learning of these individuals are discussed. Subsequently, the authors discuss some of the challenges of implementing these technologies, for teachers, learners, and educational institutions.
