Social Network Sites bzw. Netzwerkplattformen wie Facebook, MySpace oder StudiVZ haben sich in den vergangenen Jahren als populäre Form der Online-Kommunikation etabliert. Sie stehen prototypisch für das „Web 2.0“, in dem der einzelne Nutzer eigene Inhalte bereitstellen und mit einem erweiterten sozialen Netzwerk teilen kann. Spätestens mit Barack Obamas Wahlkampf 2007/2008 haben Netzwerkplattformen zudem einen festen Platz im Ensemble der Wahlkampfaktivitäten erhalten. Auch im Bundestagswahlkampf 2009 fungierten sie als „neue Arena der onlinebasierten politischen Kommunikation“ (Bieber, 2010), in der nicht nur die Spitzenkandidaten wie Angela Merkel oder Frank-Walter Steinmeier, sondern auch viele nur regional bekannte Bundestagskandidaten präsent waren.
