The present study examines how the HR roles are pronounced in the countries of the DACH region and which differences and similarities can be found according to the current tasks and roles in human resource departments between the companies in the three countries. The study is based on a questionnaire survey conducted from November 2012 to January 2013 by the Leuphana University Lüneburg, klinger consultants ag, and FHWien University of Applied Sciences of WKW. The results draw a homogenous picture among the main areas and the development of the HR activities in the DACH region. The HR roles strategic partner, change agent, administrative expert, and employee champion described by Ulrich (1997) properly show the tasks HR departments of companies in the DACH region face. An outlook is given saying that the roles change agent and strategic partner will become more relevant in the future.
