This talk will combine an overview of (my) research on health, well-being, and work-stress recovery in the modern world of work with a beginner’s introduction to experience-sampling research methods. Experience-sampling, or diary, methods are on the rise in management and organizational behavior research, and we see papers using these methods published frequently in outlets such as Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and Personnel Psychology, to name just a few. However, these methods and the meaning of results obtained with these methods are often difficult to grasp people not familiar with them. Based on examples from my own research on the challenges that modern work arrangements and circumstances such as hybrid and remote work and the use of information communication technology bring to employees and leaders in their everyday work, I will open the black box of experience sampling in management and organizational behavior research.
