This talk will present and analyse representations of imaginary and purportedly real foreign people and places in (mainly) English children’s books. From early 19th century ABC books, through atlases of imaginary worlds, to contemporary examples from the 21st century, in which foreign locations are given a playful, performative treatment, the material will be examined from an imagological perspective, which examines the construction of national and ethnic identities.
