Anfang 2017 wurde von der DFG das Wissenschaftliche Netzwerk »Soziologie der Nachhaltigkeit« eingerichtet. Ziel des Netzwerks ist es, Nachhaltigkeit als soziologischen Gegenstand zu erschließen und der Soziologie in der Nachhaltigkeitsdebatte eine Stimme zu geben. Die unter Normativitätsgesichtspunkten soziologische Skepsis gegenüber Nachhaltigkeit muss dabei nicht aufgegeben, sondern kann vielmehr produktiv gewendet werden: Denn durch ein sozialtheoretisches Erschließen sowie eine gesellschaftstheoretische Verortung von Nachhaltigkeit vermag es gerade die Soziologie, eine handlungsorientierte Nachhaltigkeitsdebatte auf sicheren theoretischen Grund zu stellen. Dabei liegt in der Multiparadigmatizität der Soziologie zugleich ihre Stärke, die es auszuspielen, und eine Herausforderung, der es zu begegnen gilt. Im Anschluss an das erste Arbeitstreffen im März 2017 gilt es im Rahmen künftiger Aktivitäten des Netzwerks, anhand der Diskussion konkreter Sachthemen (Energie, Klimawandel, Mobilität, Boden) und ausgehend von Unterschieden und Gemeinsamkeiten der eingebrachten Perspektiven die Konturen eines soziologischen Nachhaltigkeitskonzepts zu entwickeln und in der wissenschaftlichen sowie idealerweise auch in der politischen Debatte sichtbar zu machen.

In the beginning of 2017 the scientific network »Sociology of Sustainability« was founded by the DFG. The aim of the network is to make sustainability a specific sociological issue and to give sociology a voice in the sustainability debate. There is no need for sociology to suspend its scepticism towards the normative implications of sustainability; on the contrary, it can be made productive. In fact, by addressing sustainability from the perspective of social theory and locating the issue in the field of the theory of society, sociology is particularly suitable for providing a solid theoretical basis for a practice-oriented debate on sustainability. The multi-paradigmatic character of sociology is both a strength that should be developed and utilized and a challenge that should be met. Following the discussions at the first meeting in March 2017 further network activities will draw on recent debates on relevant issues (energy, climate change, mobility, soil) and on an analysis of differences and similarities to outline a sociological sustainability strategy which will then be introduced to the scientific debate and, if at all possible, the political debate as well.
