Based on the latest fundamental findings on interface friction, this paper summarizes design measures for reducing static friction towards kinetic friction in tribological systems by a targeted manipulation of the stress distribution in the interface. These measures may be particularly important for systems with high breakaway forces or undesired stick-slip phenomena.
