In der Ideengeschichte finden wir unterschiedliche Motive, die Menschen zur Philosophie, zur Friedensphilosophie oder zur Praxis, sich für einen Frieden einzusetzen, führen. Wenn das Erstaunen (taumazein) für den (platonischen) Sokrates der Anfang der Philosophie ist, so ist mit Dolf Sternberger (1997, S. 8) „das Erschrecken der Anfang der Friedensphilosophie“. Und für Immanuel Kant bedeutet die Zuwendung zum zukünftigen Frieden die Übernahme einer „Aufgabe“.
