An increase of temperature should be not an eco-physiological problem for Central European beech populations, but stress by dryness could be critical. Because the beech has physiological mechanisms for adaptation to dryness, it will probably become the dominating tree species in Central Europe. A decline in ecological fitness is to be expected at the western und southern margins of the distribution area as well as on sites with low water capacity.
