Education for Sustainable Development as principle and concept is actually discussed as point of reference for all educational sectors. Particularly the first years are suspected to be most important to develop sensibility and competencies for behaviour and acting according to the demands of sustainable development. This study gives evidence that Education for Sustainable Development is not yet established adequately in early childhood education. Basis of this conclusion are on the one hand the analysis of Bildungspläne der Länderʺ for elementary education and the programs of the most important kindergarten-organisations as well as examples of good practice, on the other hand the academic discourse about innovative approaches in the field of elementary education.
