While theoretical approaches to the concept of a «dark figure» have emphasized the various problems and contingencies involved, dark figures are often applied in the literature with little reference to these problematic issues. The present paper seeks to utilize a pragmatic dark figure concept in an attempt to examine literature that works with them and to determine how different uses of the concept of dark figures support different constructions of social problems.
