This research addresses the permanent global crises as a macro-societal cause of the importance of real utopias and their effect on the social-ecological transformation. The causes of organizing real utopias are, however, to be gathered on the micro-social level of individuals, and on the meso-social level of collectives and organizations. This paper compares urban and rural real utopias on interconnected micro-, meso- and macro-levels of individuals, organizations and networks, and societal systems. While cities are well-studied areas of utopias, the corresponding potentials and hindrances of the structurally weak countryside are less explored in this respect. In the light of the “new rurality”, which offers interstitial niches for “pioneers of change”, an explorative empirical review based on qualitative interviews and focus groups provides insights into characteristics, similarities and differences of organizing urban and rural real utopias.
