In the pursuit of sustainable consumption, education is widely ascribed a pivotal role as an instrument for disseminating more sustainable Consumer behaviours.
However, below this seemingly consensual surface the question of what Sustainability objectives are appropriate in consumer education is the subject of controversial debate. This controversy is addressed in the present conceptual paper which suggests the development of key competencies as a valid and legitimate objective that addresses both individual and societal needs. This paper introduces and discusses seven key competencies for Sustainable consumption (KCSC) as a reference framework for the development of practical educational interventions and research designs. It concludes with a discussion of possible further applications of the
framework to contribute to a great transition from contemporary consumer culture to a culture of sustainable consumption.
