N2 - International inspections are a common technique of international law.Inspectors visit prison camps, chemical factories, nuclear reactors, andresearch stations in Antarctica — to assess whether the provisions ofinternational law are complied with. But notwithstanding this practicalrelevance, international lawyers have tended to neglect internationalinspections, at least as a general category: what studies exist, tend tofocus on particular regimes, providing much detail but insucientorientation. The present volume takes a diferent approach. It looks at a wide rangeof inspection regimes and seeks to identify cross-cutting issues. Whilereecting their heterogeneity, its central aim is to situate internationalinspections in the wider eld of international law’s means of control andto highlight elements of unity in diversity. Combining panoramic andkaleidoscopic perspectives, the volume’s sixteen chapters encourageinternational lawyers to engage more fully with internationalinspections.
