Intergenerational knowledge transfer: What do we know, and where do we go from here?

The aging and declining of skilled workforces already is, and will continue to be, one of the main challenges for organizations, particularly in highly developed economies. In this context, the retention of knowledge from retiring and highly-skilled members of the baby-boomer generation has been identified as critical. Surprisingly, research on intergenerational knowledge transfer in organizations is scarce, scattered, and an integrated conceptual model is missing. Consequently, this systematic literature review aimed to identify the main themes that were addressed by the existing literature and to derive a conceptual multi-level model in order to integrate the current findings. In addition, the characteristics of the extant literature were identified, and the key terms have been defined. Finally, emphasis was placed on the development of recommendations for future research as well as for practitioners. The knowledge transfer literature as well as the literature on organizational learning framed and informed this literature review.
