The German Federal Government is considering implementing an energy tax to reduce the CO₂ emissions considerably by promoting energy conservation and substitution. The analysis of the macroeconomic consequences of introducing such a tax in the German economy using the macroeconomic information system (MIS) is discussed. The MIS was developed as a dynamic input-output model and as an instrument for evaluating greenhouse gas emission reduction strategies and to check their macroeconomic efficiency.
