In Roland Barthes’s manuscript of his very last lecture Preparation of the Novel, there is a single thumb sketch. It shows a film screening in a porn cinema. Barthes intends it as a model of his teaching method. This frivolous gesture can be linked to other statements by Barthes regarding the role of the professor and the space of the seminar. The model of the porn cinema invokes a collectively libidinous and hence political view of university teaching. The very mediality of the sketch itself, the unruliness of the scribbling, can be regarded as a contrast to the authority of writing. Therefore, in its form, it is emancipatory and corresponds to Barthes’ understanding of the university.
