In order to reduce transportation costs shipping lines increase currently particularly the dimensions of container vessels. The ship dimensions influence the vertical and horizontal loads on the quay walls. Due to the soil conditions in the north of Germany, mainly piled structures are carried out. The quay walls of the container terminals Hamburg Altenwerder and Bremerhaven show the state of the art.
