Poverty-stricken children and their challenges resulting from the effects of the climate crisis in high-income countries have not yet received sufficient attention in research. Our contribution draws on two exploratory surveys (quantitative and qualitative) with special focus on health, material conditions, and participation. The findings illustrate several burdens faced by families in all three categories, underscoring that the climate crisis exacerbates pre-existing inequalities or creates new challenges. Families use various strategies to protect their children from heat, relying on the available individual and structural options. Such strategies include technical devices and home strategies, as well as compensatory networks and public infrastructure. However, there are specific requirements that need to be addressed in these areas. Consequently, we present social policy conclusions to mitigate the specific hardships experienced by children and adolescents affected by poverty. Finally, the paper explores the political mandate of social work with regard to the socio-ecological transformation of society.
