N2 - The fact that the last census was carried out in 1960 makes any further analysis of population development very difficult. The partition of the island in 1974 changed the demographic structure. About 160 000 Greek Cypriots fled to the south when the Turkish army intervened in Cyprus. At the same time between 40 000 and 50 000 Turkish Cypriots lived south of the demarcation line. In 1975 they were relocated in the north as part of a population interchange agreement. After 1974 people from mainland Turkey settled in the northern part on Cyprus. There has been a lot of discussion about the number of Turkish immigrants. From statistics which list the number of births, deaths and population growth in the North it can be concluded that there has been some outstanding population growth in the late 1970s which has to be attributed to immigration. Altogether there are about 28 000 people in Northern Cyprus whose existence can only be explained by immigration. Probably the number of Anatolians did not exceed one quarter of the total poplation of 171 469 in 1990 and there is by no means an Anatolian majority. -from English summary
