Chasing the difference: computer-aided comparison of improvisation in postbob, hardbob, and bebop

In dieser explorativen Studie wird mit statistischen Methoden eine vergleichende Analyse von Postbop- und Bebop/Hardbop-Soli durchgeführt. Grundlage dafür sind 50 digitalisierte einstimmige Solotranskriptionen aus der Weimarer Jazz-Datenbank (WJazzD), die im Rahmen des Jazzomat Research Project aufgebaut wird. Für 23 Bebop/Hardbop-Soli und 27 Postbop-Soli wurden mit Hilfe der neu entwickelten Analyse-Software MeloSpySuite jeweils 102 musikalische Merkmale bestimmt. Auf diese Weise wurden mehrere signifikante Unterschiede zwischen Bebop/Hardbop- und Postbop-Improvisationen ermittelt. Hauptunterschiede liegen in einem größeren Ambitus sowie in einer tendenziell höheren tonalen Komplexität bzw. gesteigerten Chromatizität der Postbop-Improvisationen. Die Studie zeigt, dass der Jazzforschung und insbesondere der vergleichenden stilanalytischen Untersuchung von Jazzimprovisationen durch statistische Methoden neue Perspektiven eröffnet werden können.
