This contribution examines how by staging its protagonist as the voice of a diary, Robert Walser's novel Jakob von Gunten. Ein Tagebuch links its "formation" to the disintegration of an educational institution. It shows that in doing so, Walser opens the possibility of an aesthetic dedication to the ordinary, and introduces the reader to a world which is less the "prose of the world" (Hegel), but rather the world of prose.
