Die folgenden Themenbereiche wurden innerhalb des Umweltmanagement-Barometers eingehend analysiert:

* Wahrnehmung der Umweltproblematik
* Betroffenheit von Unternehmen durch Anspruchsgruppen
* Art der betrieblichen Umweltmaßnahmen
* Umweltmanagementsysteme
* Umweltstrategien
* Der Zusammenhang von Umwelt- und Unternehmenszielen und -leistung.

Die ersten Umweltmanagement-Barometer wurden 1996 in Skandinavien erstellt. Der Vergleich mit den Ergebnissen anderer Länder und vorhergehender Befragungen diente der Ermittlung von Trends, woraus sich für diverse Interessengruppen (Unternehmensführung, Umweltpolitik, Verbände usw.) Folgerungen ableiten ließen.
