In the face of climate change and the increased frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation events, delta cities like Rotterdam in The Netherlands and Hamburg in Germany are particularly vulnerable to flooding due to sealed surfaces, conventional sewers systems and insufficient water retention areas. A recent city planning approach to climate change adaptation and the integration of socio-ecological issues are Nature-based Solutions (NbS), whose implementation however faces several barriers as identified in the two cities.
