Andy Brogan - Speaker

In this talk Andrew explores different conceptions of anarchist educator authority and reflects on how these inform his own teaching practice. The question of authority is central to anarchist theory and practice and is a particularly important topic to consider in educational spaces where educator authority is so often assumed and reinforced from multiple sources, including the educator themselves. Ultimately the tension between an anti-authoritarian stance and a social, cultural, and professional position imbued with authority can be a productive one by forcing anarchist educators to carefully consider all aspects of their role. After outlining 3 different approaches to anarchist educator authority – roughly characterised as ‘rational authority’, ‘no authority’, and ‘flexible authority’ – Andrew gives the example of ‘Analysing Contemporary Societies’, the final semester Studium Individuale core module where he wrestles with a commitment to anti-authoritarian approaches while having to design and run a module.
