The article discusses the politics of the refugee protest movement 2012-14 with a focus on its center of protest, the squatted Oranienplatz square in Berlin. In line with Rancière’s notion of Politics, acts of becoming visible – such as squatting a central square in Berlin and civil disobedience against discriminatory asylum laws – can be understood as one of the two major forms of the movements’ politics. The other is what has been described as Imperceptible Politics, for example through the informal creation of work and legal status. The politics of visibility and imperceptibility may seem contradictory, but as the refugee struggles have shown, both can be regarded as two forms of migrant strategies and thus as the joint politics of the movement.
