N2 - This paper reflects the conceptualization, implementation and use of a virtual server platform for urban documentary filmmaking in different teaching environments, ranging from immediate on-site recording to remote collaboration between scholars over longer periods. The platform is part of an on-going series of workshops, courses, summer and spring schools as well as individual research and production work on urban frontier zones. In addition to a SWOT analysis, we derived a strategy for future use in the context of international workshops as action research design. This should facilitate analysis of the film material and open a discourse about “Frontier Zones” on a broader level, with insights by experts from various parts of the world and coming from different academic disciplines, sharing their thoughts by visual means and narrative analyses. The material from the schools should be available for all participants in the long term in order to enable the schools to carry out new methodological experiments in the post-production.
