This article critically discusses the theoretical and empirical assumptions of Arend Lijphart’s comparative study on “Patterns of Democracy”. Based on a systematic review of the international literature, it suggests that the expectations about the extent to which democratic patterns impact a government’s effective and efficient policy performance must be lowered.
