German climate change law is closely intertwined with energy law and integrated into international and European law. At the centre is the Federal Climate Change Act with ambitious targets and its specific control mechanism. The 2021 landmark decision of the Federal Constitutional Court has obliged the state to take far-reaching measures to protect current and future generations in the sense of an intertemporal protection of freedom rights. With the coalition agreement of 2021, the new federal government has undertaken a !arge number of measures, especially to expand renewable energies. The war in Ukraine in 2022 will mean that efforts to reduce dependence on energy imports will have to be stepped up considerably.
