Description
The diffusion of digital media has brought out recognizable changes of political communication, starting with the advent of websites and going on to the use of the manifold platforms of web 2.0. Through the new digital media, the relationship between parliaments and citizens may also change, as new opportunities for communication come to life. Many national parliaments have adjusted to this development, and so did the European Parliament (EP).
However, it is not clear to what extent the new digital media has enhanced the communicative channels between the EP and the European citizens.
The PhD project addresses the question which e-participation offers are made by the EP and how they are used. In detail, it will be analysed how the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) adapt to the new digital media, what offers are made and how they are used in conjunction with citizens.
