Das Institut für Bewegung, Sport und Gesundheit widmet sich der Ausbildung der Studierenden für das Lehramtsfach Sport (sowohl für die Grund-, Haupt- und Realschule als auch für Berufsbildende Schulen) und verschiedenen Aspekten der Sportwissenschaft. Dabei richtet sich das besondere Augenmerk in Forschung und Lehre zum einen auf Fragen der Sportpädagogik, Sportsoziologie und Sportdidaktik und zum anderen auf Aspekte der Bewegungslehre, Trainingswissenschaft und Gesundheitsförderung.
 
Wichtige Themenbereiche entstammen neben dem Schulsport und Sportunterricht, den Bereichen des Breiten-, Leistungs- und Gesundheitssports. Die Sportwissenschaft koordiniert und integriert dabei Beiträge aus verschiedenen Disziplinen oder entwickelt interdisziplinäre Zugänge zu diesen Feldern.
