Jumana Manna’s film A Magical Substance Flows Into Me from 2016 is a powerful example of an artistic excavation, examination and critical re-enactment of an archive containing material that is part of a contested history, namely the history of Palestine. This article argues that Manna’s work goes beyond the category of the so called "archival turn" that was coined for artists creating “critical archives” (Downey 2015). By analyzing Manna’s film, this article shows that her work could better be described as archival critique.
